Chapter News

06/29/2018 - Risk Management Potpourri
Our June meeting featured Debra Cooper, RN , Senior Risk Specialist for Coverys. With only an hour allocated, Deb did a great job covering Risk Management essentials. The key to prevention is identifying the potential loss exposures. Do not use social media for sharing and discussing information, even if you don’t identify a specific patient. Deb used the example of an OB/GYN who posted on her Facebook page “So I have a patient who has chosen to either no-show or be late (sometimes hours) for all of her prenatal visits, ultrasound and NSTs. She is now 3 hours late for her induction. May I show up late to her delivery?” Approximately 420 “friends” had access to that post. It got re-posted to Mercy Moms to Be page and went viral!!! And that was from a physician. No matter how many years you have been in healthcare, it is really important to attend yearly risk management seminars.

05/25/2018 - Traverse City Spring Seminar
May 18, 2018 was the annual Traverse City PAHCOM Chapter Spring Seminar. What a great day! We had a fantastic line up of speakers, the largest turn out to date, and wonderful sponsors. Attorney Lou Rabaut spoke to us on Employment Laws and Myths. Sean Glaze (yes, THE Sean Glaze from our National Conference in 2017!) showed us How to Transform our Staff into a Great Team and also How to Give and Receive Feedback. Our very own Chapter Vice-President, Michele Lurvey, spoke on How to Lead from the Middle, Kimberly Coleman, MD from My ePhysicians, PC discussed Telemedicine: Passing Trend or New Reality, and Josh Richmond, Sr. Director, Physician Engagement and Organizational Integration from the Michigan State Medical Society gave a Michigan Legislative Update. Our newest CMM's were recognized: Cindy Conquest, Terry McPhall, Anna Ohler, Peter Robinson, Jenni Rose and Keisha Saxton. Congratulations everyone! We all learned a lot, had a wonderful time and some folks left with great gifts from our sponsors. Now we need to start planning for next year!

04/24/2018 - New Opioid Law and It's Impact
Stacy Hettiger, director of Medical and Regulatory policy at Michigan State Medical Society (MSMS) discussed the new Michigan Prescribing and Dispensing Laws for opioids and schedule II-V medications. The current timeline for changes is: May 31, 2018: All prescribers to register for MAPS (Michigan Automated Prescription System) June 1, 2018: Start date for mandatory MAPS query when prescribing controlled substances to any patient. Exemptions include prescriptions written for less than or equal to a 3-day supply and dispensing occurs in a hospital or surgical freestanding outpatient facility and is administered in the facility. June 1, 2018: Prior to prescribing an opioid, a prescriber or another health professional must provide information on the danger of opioid addition, how to properly dispose of an expired, unused or unwanted controlled substance, that the delivery of a controlled substance is a felony under Michigan Law and if the patient is pregnant or is a female of reproductive age, the short – and long-term effects of exposing a fetus to a controlled substance. July 1, 2018: Prescribers treating a patient for acute pain shall not prescribe the patient more than a 7-day supply of an opioid within a 7-day period. 3/31/2019: A prescriber must have a “bone fide prescriber-patient” relationship to prescribe controlled substances. “Bone fide prescriber-patient relationship” is defined as treatment or counseling relationship between a prescriber and a patient in which both of the following are present: The prescribe has reviewed the patient’s relevant medical or clinical records and completed a full assessment of the patient’s medical history and current medical options, including a relevant medical evaluation of the patient conducted in person or via telehealth, and the prescribe has created and maintained records of the patient’s condition in accordance with medically accepted standards. There are a lot of questions that remain and MSMS is working to clarify for providers. These changes will have a lot of impact on patients as well as providers.
